SHADYSIDE (KDKA) – One man has been arrested in connection with a three-alarm fire in Shadyside that left four firefighters injured early Monday morning.
According to police, an 18-year-old man has been charged with arson in connection with the fire that began on Maryland Avenue around 2 a.m.
The man was taken into custody at a mental and behavioral care home next door. Once he was placed in the back of a police car, he began kicking the inside of the door.
He is facing arson and other charges after four firefighters were injured in a flashover.
"When you hear that call come in, I focus all my efforts and my manpower on accountability, getting our guys out of there, making sure they're safe. While you're doing that, you only have so many men on the scene, your suppression efforts are delayed. So, now, the fire gets to gain headway on you," Pittsburgh Fire Department Assistant Chief Tom Cook said.
Crews were able to bring the fire under control in about an hour.
Three of the injured firefighters were taken to a local hospital where two have been treated and released.
A fourth firefighter was treated at the scene.
The owner of the home was able to get out safely.
