SLIPPERY ROCK TOWNSHIP (KDKA) — A man remains behind bars and a woman is also facing charges after state police say about 900 feet of copper railroad signal wire was taken from railroad tracks in Butler County.
According to state police, 20-year-old Zachary Atwell of Harrisville has been charged with risking a catastrophe.
Investigators say Atwell is accused of removing the wire from along the Canadian National Railroad tracks near McCandless Road in Slippery Rock Township last week.
Nicole Watterson, 20, also of Harrisville, has also been charged in connection with the case. She is facing receiving stolen property and conspiracy charges.
State police say she allegedly helped to sell the copper wire.
Officials say the wire is used to control track switches and "provides signal information to train engineers to ensure train separation."
Both Atwell and Watterson have waived all charges to court.
Atwell remains in the Butler County Prison in lieu of $25,000 bond.
