AT&T Sold 6.1 Million Smartphones During Q3 2012, 77% Of Which Were iPhones

AT&T continues to ride the iPhone’s gravy train.

AT&T has announced its financial results for the third quarter of 2012 this morning, and once again, Apple’s iPhone has been its biggest-selling smartphone. The carrier sold 6.1 million smartphones in total during the three-month period, a whopping 77% of which were iPhones.

AT&T activated 4.7 million iPhones during the third quarter, which is one million more activations than it saw during the second quarter. In comparison, its nearest rival, Verizon Wireless, activated 3.1 million iPhones during the same period.

Just 18% of iPhone customers were new to AT&T. However, the company noted that due to supply constraints, the “vast majority of third-quarter iPhone sales [were] going to existing customers to satisfy pent-up demand.”

AT&T now has a postpaid smartphone base of 44.5 million subscribers, which is 1.4 million more than it had in the second quarter of 2012.
