PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Former Penn State University president Graham Spanier was arraigned on charges in connection with the Jerry Sandusky scandal Wednesday morning.
According to KDKA-TV’s Harold Hayes, Spanier was ordered to give up his passport and remain within Pennsylvania and was released on $125,000 unsecured bond.
A preliminary hearing was tentatively scheduled for Nov. 16, but Judge William Wenner predicted it may not happen until January.
When asked for her reaction to the charges, Spanier’s attorney, Elizabeth Ainslie, of Philadelphia, dismissed the attorney general’s claim that Spanier was involved in a conspiracy of silence.
“That is ridiculous,” Ainslie said. “Dr. Spanier was not even given a chance to speak to this Grand Jury and we look forward to giving his side in the future.”
According to the Attorney General's Office, former Penn State president Graham Spanier is facing the following charges:
- Perjury
- 2 counts of endangering welfare of children
- Obstruct admin law/Other govt function
- Conspiracy – Obstruct Admin law/other govt function – failure to report
- Penalties – failure to report
- Conspiracy – Perjury
- Conspiracy – Endangering welfare of children
The longtime Penn State president was forced to resign in the wake of charges being filed against Sandusky a year ago and has been long identified as a target in an investigation of a possible cover up by university administrators.
